Callie On The Job: Baked By Gene

DU QUOIN -- For this week's Callie On The Job, Callie visited Baked By Gene and put her baking skills to the test. Co-owners Scott Latta and Gene Krone turned their lifetime hobby of baking into a career when they opened the bakery on Division Street in 2013.

Since the bakery serves breakfast items, days for Scott and Gene start at 4:00 a.m. Gene makes the breakfast foods, such as cinnamon rolls and scones along with the desserts, and Scott handles the bread making.

Baked By Gene makes bread not only to sell at the bakery but also for other local eateries. St. Nicholas Brewing Company in Du Quoin buys their breads and buns straight from the bakery. 

The bakery also serves daily sandwiches for lunch. They are currently renovating the space next door to have a cafe where customers can sit and enjoy breakfast, lunch, or just a pastry. Scott and Gene hope to have the cafe open in the fall.
