Callie On The Job: Continental Tire

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- This week Callie gets her hands dirty and learns how tires are made at Continental Tire.

Continental Tire in Mount Vernon was built in 1973.The facility produces passenger and light truck tires along with commercial vehicle tires for semi trucks.

The factory is split into several different departments. Callie was in the tire building department for the passenger and light truck tires. The rubber is molded into a tire in this part of the factory.Once the tires leave the building department they travel near the ceiling on conveyor belts to storage until they are ready to head to curing then onto final finish.

Around 33 hundred employees work at Continental Tire. The Facility pulls employees from a 65 mile radius and from more than 150 zip codes. Continental Tire covers nearly 100 acres, all under roof. Since the facility is so large the maintenance department has bikes and carts with tool boxes on the back so they can easily go throughout the facility to make repairs.

Continental Tire also has an on site workout gym, with athletic trainers that employees are free to use 24/7. Another amenity at the facility is the cafeteria where hot meals are served throughout the day.
