CARTERVILLE -- News 3 has learned 55 employees at John A. Logan College are receiving layoff notices in the mail.

35 faculty are among them, along with 15 staff members and five janitors, according to Illinois Education Association staff member Bret Seferian.

"Unfortunately, you are one of the persons whose names are being presented to the Board of Trustees as part of the recommended staff reduction which, if adopted, will mean you will not be employed as a full-time faculty member after the conclusion of the Spring 2016 semester on May 31, 2016," reads one of the letters obtained by News 3.

It's signed by Dr. Ronald House, the college president, and dated Friday. Employees began receiving them Monday via U.S. Mail, according to a faculty member's spouse.

The layoff notices come as the board of trustees tries to find ways to cut millions of dollars from the budget. Like all public colleges, JALC has not received state funding due to the budget impasse in Springfield, which has been going on since July.

The layoff letter notes "the College is experiencing unprecedented financial difficulties as a direct result of the failure of the State of Illinois to pass a budget."

But some employees are questioning whether the state is fully to blame.

Dr. House, in his letter to those affected, said their names will be forwarded to board members at a special meeting Wednesday night. The board will have to vote to approve the layoffs.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in O'Neil Auditorium.
