CHICAGO (AP) - A published report says campaign funds controlled by House Speaker Michael Madigan collected over $7 million in 2015, including $2.8 million in December.

The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1RVbl0F) that's roughly $2.3 million more than the Democratic Party of Illinois' leader took in during the same pre-election time frame two years ago.

Political experts say the uptick is a response to Gov. Bruce Rauner's massive fundraising. The Republican had over $19.6 million in his campaign fund at October's start.

State campaign finance law allows Madigan to take in multiple contributions from the same donor as long as each contribution goes into a separate fund. The Tribune reports that was the case with four funds Madigan controls. Nearly 70 percent of the money came from organized labor, trial lawyers and law firms.
