WSIL -- Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth gave her thoughts about the terror group ISIS when she visited Carbondale on Tuesday.
She said she does want to destroy ISIS, but war must be carefully thought out.
"You can't just decide to send troops into battle, without first deciding what is the end state, how do we get out of there, who do we work with, ..." she said.
But, she she is not against going to war.
Duckworth is a retired veteran from the Illinois Army National Guard.
She was a helicopter pilot during the Iraq War in 2004. While there, her helicopter was shot down, which caused her to lose both of her legs and partial use of one arm.
"You can't just say we're going to willy-nilly send in thousands of troops because then you have no plan," she said."It's really easy to sound the drums of war. I'm not against going to war. I will defend my nation."
She said she would volunteer to go to war to defend the United States, but then joked that the military may not have a use for a "broken down helicopter pilot."
Regardless, Duckworth said she believes, with her military background, she can help the United States by becoming a U.S. Senator, she is now a U.S. Representative, and help write legislation and give her input on such situations.
