Indoor ice rink coming to Harrisburg

HARRISBURG -- Southern Illinois gets a Christmas present of sorts as a new business, featuring an ice rink, prepares to open in southern Illinois.

It's got all the latest technology and makes up part of Z-Factor, the new family entertainment center coming to Harrisburg. Crews have worked on it for over six months, hoping to draw more people to town.

Music, lights, and a fog machine are all features you may see at a concert or a night on the dance floor. Soon it will be seen inside the Z-Factor. The center will have several attractions once it opens after the new year. It will feature dodgeball, basketball, and volleyball, all on trampolines.

"It's a lot better than having to go a long way just to go someplace like this," said 10-year-old Austin Collins of Eldorado.

Collins became one of the first to see the place and try out the trampolines. He is turning 11 soon and wants to have his birthday party there.

"If you're going to go a long place just to do ice skating, you're going to pay a lot more money than to go here," said Collins.

Z-Factor owner Sal Sulaymanov said he is using high-grade synthetic ice, comparable to natural ice.

"People that skate on a regular basis usually can't even kind of the differentiate between the two," he said.

The rink still needs work to give it more of slippery feel, a fence for safety, and some seating.

"We wanted to bring in something new. Something interesting and something that is long-lasting and it's not in style today out of style tomorrow," explained Sulaymanov.

The project is 90 percent complete and will also have a paintball gun range.

Harrisburg Mayor Dale Fowler said he's impressed by all the effort that has gone into creating a place for all ages.

"What a compliment to the entire facility and also for southeastern Illinois to have an opportunity to ice-skate and for kids and adults to have the opportunity to learn something new," said Fowler.

Sulaymanov doesn't have an official open date yet, but he's aiming for the third week in January. He said many people have already picked up gift cards for Christmas.
