Rep. John Bradley addresses Ameren rate hike

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Southern Illinois power bills will likely go up next pay cycle and state Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, wants to know about it.

Ameren has approved a rate hike from the Illinois Commerce Commission so they can make improvements. But Bradley said this increase is not necessary and he has teamed up with the Citizens Utility Board to ask the commission to reconsider the rate hike.

"Anytime we can provide rate relief to people in southern Illinois, particularly, when we've seen an unnecessary spike in rates here recently, I'm always for that," Bradley said.

The increase will be about $2 to $7 on electric bills and two to six dollars on natural gas bills.

"Yeah, pay attention to your power bills. Pay attention to what's going on and if you see a spike in your power bills, let me know. Let someone know, because we've had a pretty mild winter here in the last several weeks and I think a lot of us are accustomed, that winter comes along and we are going to use more electricity," Bradley said.

The Federal Regulation Commission is also investigating the increase.

Bradley said he is unsure how long the investigation will take.
