Local businesses prepare for firearm deer season

Posted: Updated:

WEST FRANKFORT -- Firearm deer season starts this weekend and hunters aren't the only ones gearing up. Many local businesses are getting ready as well, including two West Frankfort businesses that have kept busy preparing for the hunt.

With firearm season rapidly approaching, William Kimble, a sales associate at S.I. Shooter Supply in West Frankfort, has noticed an increase to the number of visitors to the shop.

"Business has been pretty decent this past year with gun sales and everything. But right here, at the last two or three weeks prior to gun season coming in, business has picked up extremely," Kimble says.

He recommends preparing firearms months in advance, because if you wait until the last minute, you may have to fight the crowds.

"That last couple weeks you're gonna be fighting and contending with hundreds of people," Kimble said. "This is a smaller gun shop and hundreds of people have been up here."

Those extra months give you plenty of time to relearn how your gun works and make sure it operates properly before taking it to the woods.

Once you shoot a deer, Chance Miles, owner of Miles Brothers Meats, says some simple steps will keep your meat tasting fresh.

"If they bring it in as soon as they put the animal down, field dress it, bring it in, the meat just stays better for a lot longer," Miles said.

Miles Brothers Meats sees an increase in business from October to February, but during firearm season alone, hunters will bring more deer to their business.

"We'll probably get around anywhere from four to 500 this coming weekend," he says.

But despite the extra work, these local business will gladly continue to prepare for next season.

Miles also says if you wish to donate a deer, they will process it and donate it to a local food pantry at no cost.
