Pinckneyville honors band director with flash mob

Posted: Updated:

PINCKNEYVILLE -- A flash mob of more than 500 students honored the high school's band director, who's hanging-up his baton after 32 years.

So alumni and students decided to get together and send Steve Cannedy off with a bang.

"I thought they might have something planned but nothing quite like that, that was exciting, that was really good," said Cannedy.

Beth Lipe, one of Cannedy's former students is the mastermind behind Mr. Cannedy's spectacular send-off.

"We've been planning for about a year and a half trying to pull everything off," said Lipe.

The planning paid off as a flash mob appeared hundreds of people swarming Pinckneyville's football field dancing and honoring someone that many say have done so much for them.

"Oh my gosh he is kind of like the icon of our southern Illinois band directors and so many people look up to him so many of the new band directors come to him for his expertise," added Lipe.

Cannedy says he couldn't have asked for a better send off.

"Some of the people out there dancing and then the kids from other schools that came out that was really neat," said Cannedy.

Jeanne Pence one of Cannedy's former students flew all the way from Germany just to wish her old band director a happy retirement.

"I mean he's the reason I went into music I have a bachelors and master's degree in music and he's the reason I did it," said Pence.

Pence says the flash mob is only the beginning of the celebration. Cannedy was also honored at the Mardi Gras Parade and will have a retirement party at the school Sunday.

"It was nice to have people come back and I really appreciate all they've done it's awesome," added Cannedy.
