BELLEVILLE --Herrin's football battled Althoff in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday.

The Tigers trailed 14-6 at halftime but once again they clawed their way back in the second half.

Althoff scored a touchdown in the third quarter to take a 21-6 lead but that would be the last time Althoff would find the endzone.

Herrin's defense gave its offense a chance in the second half. Herrin's Chase Butler scored late in the fourth quarter. The Tigers converted the two point conversion but that is as close as Herrin would get, in a 21-14 loss.

Althoff's quarterback, Eric Mertens played a big role in leading his team to the win. He threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns.
Also, playing a big role in Herrin's loss was the turnovers. The Tigers turned the ball over four times.

After the game, Herrin's head coach Jason Karnes said he was proud of how hard his team fought.

"I don't know if I have been more proud of a group," said Karnes. "They just fought, fought, and fought. We shot ourselves in the foot a little bit today. We turned the ball over four times which is uncharacteristic of us, especially in the last seven to eight weeks. We turned it over but our defense still rose to the occasion. It's been three weeks in a row we have been down at halftime and came out and fought. We gave it all we got and just came up short today."

Herrin's Chase Merrill carried the ball 18 times for 100 yards and one touchdown.

Herrin finishes the season at a mark of 8-3.
