Du Quoin to Co-op with Elverado; Martin to Return

By WSIL Sports

WSIL -- In a move that could trigger a series of dominoes changing the Southern Illinois high school football conference landscape, the school boards for Du Quoin and Elverado both voted unanimously for a two year co-op in football.

The move must be approved by the River to River Conference and then by the IHSA.

Even with a football coop with Trico, the Falcons have struggled with numbers.  Du Quoin's numbers battle is with enrollment, which has dropped below 400.

If approved other moves could follow if the Black Diamond fills its open spot.

Sparta will hold a town meeting Saturday afternoon to discuss the possibility of moving to the Diamond if Elverado does leave.

Trico meanwhile will discuss its athletic options at a school board meeting Monday.

The other big news from the Du Quoin school board meeting is that long-time coaching great Al Martin will return to the sidelines for a 27th year.

Martin has retired as a teacher, but will return as head football coach.  He has won 250 games including two state championships in 26 years.  The Indians finished 3-6 last year, his first losing season.
