Du Quoin Comes Up Short in Final Seconds
DU QUOIN -- Trailing by a touchdown with five seconds to play, Du Quoin had a chance to tie the game and force overtime. But Brenden Fred's pass hit the turf as the Indians fell in a heartbreaker to Camp Point Central 35-28 in the Class 2A quarterfinals Saturday at Van Metre Field.
The Panthers (12-0) got out to a quick start, returning the opening kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown. The Indians (9-3) responded right back, as Shayne Baxter ran their second play from scrimmage 72-yards for a touchdown to tie the game.
Camp Point Central came up with 14 unanswered points to take a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. But just before half, Du Quoin put together a drive, capped off by a four-yard touchdown run from Fred, cutting the lead to 21-14 at half.
The Panthers put two more touchdowns on the board to take their second double-digit lead of the day before the Indians made another run.
After starting the season 0-2, Du Quoin won nine out of its last ten games. Camp Point Central will play Belleville Althoff in semifinals next weekend.
