Chester's Magical Season Ends

CHESTER -- After recording the first perfect regular season in school history, the Chester Yellow Jackets didn't think it was much of a reward when they drew Belleville Althoff in the first round of the 2A playoffs.

Most people didn't give the Black Diamond champs much of a chance, and that was easy to understand.

After all, the Crusaders call the South 7 home and play mainly 5A and 6A competition. They only found themselves in 2A due an IHSA rule that allowed them to ditch the multiplier put on non-boundaried schools.

Yet, halfway through the third quarter, when Jake Cowan hit Brad Asselmeier for a 52 yard touchdown, the Yellow Jackets had an unthinkable 17-14 lead on mighty Althoff.

David was taking down the giant--again.

This time though, the giant got up. Althoff scored three unanswered touchdowns fueled by a pair of scintillating interceptions from senior linebacker Erik Furmanek.

Chester continued to swing, but the giant had too much and wound up winning 42-24.

The Yellow Jackets' story book season ended at 9-1.
