Carterville Outlasts Vandalia
VANDALIA -- The Carterville Lions overcame a slow start, then had to hold off Vandalia late in a 35-34 overtime thriller Saturday.
After falling behind 14-0, the Lions scored 21 unanswered points to take a 21-14 third quarter lead.
The Vandals marched down the field to tie it, only to watch Carterville junior quarterback Michael Aschemann scamper 35 yards for a 28-21 Lions' lead with five minutes to play.
Ryan Ambuehl was an absolute beast for the Vandals, chewing up Carterville's defense on the ground and through the air. Ambuehl's touchdown pass with a little more than a minute to go tied the game at 28 and ultimately forced overtime.
In overtime, Phillip Frangelo ran in the first play from ten yards out for a 35-28 Lions' lead.
Ambuehl scored from three yards out to cut it to 35-34. The Vandals went for the two point conversion and the win, but Dalton Hoch knocked down Ambuehl's pass in the endzone giving Carterville a 35-34 win.
The Lions will host Benton in the second round next week.
