CARBONDALE -- SIU's softball team is currently 14-13 overall, and 3-2 in conference play this season. The Salukis are tied for fourth place in the MVC.

They are led by five seniors, which includes three local products. Carterville native, Kelsea Ashton plays third base for the Salukis. Taylor Orsburn was a standout at Cobden. She guards first base and pitches for SIU, and Jana Spivey played her high school softball for Hardin County. She is the Dawgs' second baseman

"They are just such good kids and good people," said SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock. "They are so competitive. They are great players and they bring a lot to the program, along with the other two in the senior class."

Those three have big aspirations for the Salukis this season. They are focused on helping lead the team to a conference championship.

"Of course, it is to get a ring," said Taylor Orsburn.

"I want a ring," said Jayna Spivey.

"I want a ring on my finger," said Kelsea Ashton.

"I want it so bad for them and I tell them that all the time," said Blaylock. "Jen, Buddy, and I all have one but we want them to experience it. I feel like they deserve to experience it."

As each game passes for these three, they are reminded that they are writing the final chapter for each of their legacies at SIU.

"It is definitely starting to sink in but I am trying to not think about it and just take it one game at a time," said Spivey.

"It is a little emotional but I am excited and I think we are doing great and I hope it is a great senior year," said Orsburn.

"It is sad and it's exciting," said Ashton. "I am ready to start a new part of my life but I am definitely not taking it for granted and just enjoy every moment with these girls right now."

Now SIU will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Missouri State for a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
