Salukis Picked 7th in MVFC Preseason Poll
CARBONDALE -- The SIU football team was picked to finish seventh in the Missouri Valley Football Conference preseason poll released Thursday.
Last year's FCS and conference champion North Dakota State is at the top of the list. The Bison got 37 out of 38 first place votes. Northern Iowa is second, followed by Youngstown State. Illinois State is tabbed fourth, the Redbirds got the other first place vote.
Indiana State and South Dakota State round out the top six. SIU was voted seventh, followed by new conference member South Dakota. Western Illinois and Missouri State round out the top 10.
A big reason for the seventh place selection is last year's record. The Salukis went 4-7 in 2011, winning just two games in the conference.
The dawgs return 15 starters from that team, including four players who were named to the preseason all-conference team.
Defensive linemen Kenneth Boatright and Kayon Swanson joined tight end MyCole Pruitt and return specialist Steve Strother on that list.
SIU starts its season Sunday with the first official practice.
