Salukis Fall Short in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS -- Despite being the 10th seed, the Basketball Salukis were the MVC's hottest team entering this weekend's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis.
The Dawgs though looked nothing like the team that had won five of six and lost to Missouri State 61-53 in a first round game.
SIU did jump out to a 13-8 lead in the first half, but the Bears went on a 14-2 run and never relinquished the lead.
Missouri State built a 32-22 lead at the half and was only really threatened once in the second half.
Anthony Beane, Junior's three pointer pulled the Salukis with five at 39-34, but the Bears promptly went on an 8-0 spurt to push the lead back to double figures.
Freshman of the Year Marcus Marshall led all scorers with 18. Anthony Downing added 16 for Missouri State.
Beane, Junior led SIU with 12. Desmar Jackson chipped in 11, but the Bears held red hot Jeff Early to just eight points and three rebounds--well below his season averages and well below his production of the past month.
The Salukis finish the season 14-17. The Bears advance to meet second seeded Wichita State in the quarterfinals.
