Salukis Fall Just Short at Illinois
CHAMPAIGN -- The Football Salukis started fast and finished with a flurry, but they could not overcome a rocky middle, falling at Illinois 42-34 in the season opener for both teams.
The Salukis led 7-3 after one quarter, but the Illini outscored Southern 22-0 in the second to lead 25-7 at the half.
Illinois extended the lead to 22 in the third at 39-17, but the Dawgs put up a furious rally.
SIU cut it to 42-34 and had a chance to potentially tie with less than a minute to go, but Kory Faulkner's pass attempt to Adam Fuehne on fourth and goal with 44 seconds fell incomplete.
Faulkner threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions on the day.
Illinois senior Nathan Scheelhaase was nearly unstoppable, completing 28 of 36 passes for 416 yards and two scores.
The Salukis will host Eastern Illinois next Saturday night for their home opener.
