Saluki Rewind 2011-2012
WSIL -- SIU athletics had an up-and-down year in 2011-2012, winning only one Missouri Valley Conference team title.
The Salukis lone championship belonged to the men's indoor track and field team, who won the MVC title for the first time in 20 years. Three other teams finished runner-up in the conference, the men's cross country team, baseball and softball.
The biggest highlight was SIU thrower Jeneva McCall. The senior won a national title in the women's hammer throw last Thursday. She also won the indoor national title in the weight throw in March. McCall leaves SIU with three national championships, most all-time in school history.
Other accomplishments include the baseball and softball Salukis run to a postseason title. Both played for a Missouri Valley Conference tournament title. The softball team lost in the championship game to Illinois State but finished the year 36-20, the 16th straight season the Dawgs won at least 30 games.
The baseball team also lost in the MVC title game. Creighton scored four runs in the 7th to rally past SIU, who finished the season 31-28.
It was another year of futility for Saluki basketball. The men's team only won eight games, a new school record for losses. The women also won just eight games.
The football Salukis struggled as well, finishing the season 4-7. The dawgs were competitive in almost every game but were just 2-6 in the conference.
