Saluki Football Opens Camp, Vincent Out Due To Injury
CARBONDALE -- SIU's football team kicked off training camp at Saluki Stadium early on Sunday. One of the main story lines entering camp is the battle for the starting quarterback position.
One of the quarterbacks vying for the starting role is junior Matt Vincent. However, Vincent missed practice due to a cut that he suffered on his right hand. He is expected to miss the first few days of camp.
"Matt has an injury that needs to heal a little bit," said SIU head coach Dale Lennon. "It is a cut that he had suffered in an accident that he was in. He is out for a couple days and that will give both Iannotti and West a lot of good reps and Matt just has to come in and make up some ground.
"You have to be on the field and it is a cutthroat business," said SIU quarterbacks coach Nick Hill. "There is only one ball to go around and sometimes you can be a backup linebacker and still get 20 reps a game but at quarterback there is just one ball."
Now since Vincent missed practice, most of the first and second team reps at quarterback were given to Sophomore Ryan West and Eastern Michigan transfer Mark Iannotti. Both rotated in and out at the position throughout practice.
SIU senior running back Ken Malcome sprained his left ankle in the spring game. Malcome has suffered some setbacks during the summer and is currently on crutches and he is wearing a boot. Malcome missed practice on Sunday and might not return until the end of camp.
