Illinois State Blanks SIU
CARBONDALE -- Illinois State scratched out a pair of first inning runs, and sophomore Dan Savas made it stand, as the Redbirds clinched a share of the MVC regular season baseball championship with a 2-0 win Friday at Abe Martin Field.
The Redbirds scored two runs without the benefit of a hit against Saluki starter Sam Coonrod. Coonrod settled in and didn't allow another run in six innings of work. Matt Murphy came in and threw three scoreless innings of relief.
It did not matter because Savas was nearly unhittable. Savas improved to 9-0 with a four hit shutout, striking out eight along the way.
It has been a frustrating two days for the Salukis. They have watched the Redbirds win both games with a total of seven hits.
ISU can clinch the number one seed in next week's MVC Tournament with a win Saturday. If SIU wins, the Redbirds would fall to the two seed, and the two teams would face each other again Tuesday night in the opening round of the Valley Tournament.
