Committee Handling Point Guard Duties For SIU

By WSIL Sports

The SIU men's basketball team will look to improve to 3-3 in conference play with a win against Bradley on Friday night.

But the Salukis will be without their point guard Marcus Fillyaw, who will miss his third game due a broken bone in his left hand.

SIU lost its first game without its point guard but bounced back to claim a 68-66 win against Northern Iowa on Tuesday.

The Salukis have used a committee of players at point guard and they have found mixed results. In the first half againt Northern Iowa, SIU had just one assist but everything changed in the second half, as SIU finished with 11 total assists and only 13 turnovers.

"The adjustment period for us Caleb was going to be difficult," said SIU head coach Barry Hinson. "We tried not to make a big deal out of it because we didn't want to draw attention to it. Psychologically we didn't want to didn't want our guys to lose any momentum but we knew it was going to be a major problem. It was a major deal in the first half and we really got after Anthony at halftime about being a point guard, being a leader, being a talker. Also, the same thing with Desmar because we are doing it by a committee. Until we make an adjustment we are going to struggle a little bit. Hopefully in the second half against Iowa, we found out that the adjustment has been made."

The Salukis hope to continue to move the ball more efficiently against Bradley on Friday. Tip-off for that game is set for 7:00 pm.
