Southern Illinois Trapshooting Team Enjoying Competing At Sparta

By WSIL Sports

SPARTA --   The Grand American Trap Shooting Championships continue until August 15th at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta. One team competing in the event on Saturday was the Southern Illinois Trapshooting team.

Bill and Joyce Lawrence became the coaches of the SI trap over a year ago. The team consists of 12 members, ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old. This team allows students the opportunity to compete in trap shooting, even if their high school does not have a team.

Both Bill and Joyce hope that their team could help the sport grow in Southern Illinois.

"I would like to see these kids take it back to their own schools and start their own teams and really make this a big sport in Southern Illinois," said Joyce Lawrence. "My grandpa got me into this and if he wouldn't have ever found this team then I wouldn't be here," said SI trap member Landon Owens. "So, this means a lot to me to be out here."

Now if you are interested in being a part of the SI Trap team, you can email Joyce at
