Bird Count at Crab Orchard

WILLIAMSON CO. -- Local bird watchers will gather at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday December 18th to record the species of birds they observe on the Refuge that day.

They will break up into teams and scour the forests, fields and marshes located within the 15 mile diameter count circle looking for birds of every species. Their counting efforts will be compiled and submitted to the National Audubon Society to become part of one of the Nation’s most extensive and valuable conservation tools, the Christmas Bird Count.

The longest running citizen science survey in the world, Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place December 14th, 2011 through January 5th, 2012. Tens of thousands of volunteers are needed across North America to add to over a century of data about the Continent’s birds.

Scientists rely on the remarkable trend data of Audubon’s CBC to better understand how birds are faring in North America and beyond our borders.

“Everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Counts plays a critical role in helping us focus attention and conservation where it is most needed.” said Audubon CBC director Geoff LeBaron. “In addition to the impacts of climate change on birds and our analysis of common birds in decline, it is the foundation for Audubon’s WatchList, which most identifies species in dire need of conservation help.”

To participate in a count at a nearby National Wildlife Refuge, contact the count compiler to reserve your spot. There is a $5 fee for adults over age 19. Children are free.
