Miners Win Game One, Frontier League Championship
Florence, KY -- The Southern Illinois Miners beat the Florence Freedom 5-3 Wednesday night in the opening game of the Frontier League Championship series.
The Miners took a 3-1 in the third inning behind back-to-back home runs from Chris Anderson and Cannon Lester. Southern Illinois starter David Harden pitched 6.2 innings, earning his second win of the postseason.
Florence battled back, tying the game 3-3 in the sixth inning. But the Miners got a break in the seventh thanks to a Freedom error. With two outs and a runner on third, Pierre LePage dropped a routine fly ball at second base, allowing Jason Ganek to score the go-ahead run. Southern Illinois plated another run in the eighth to go up 5-3.
Miners closer Brandon Cunniff allowed Florence to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but worked out of the jam, preserving the 5-3 win.
