Miners Win Frontier League Championship
MARION -- After watching leads get away in Saturday's game three to Florence, the Southern Illinois Miners saw the same thing happening again Sunday--only this time Jake Kaase came to the rescue.
Shawn Gilblair got the start for Southern Illinois. Despite not having pitched in a couple of weeks, Gilblair was sharp, striking out five in five shutout innings.
The Miners grabbed the lead in the fourth, with a little help from the Freedom. Pierre Lepage's two-out throwing error on Jason Ganek's grounder allowed Javier Herrera to score the game's first run. Chad Maddox followed with a two run homer, staking the Miners to a 3-0 lead.
Poor defense in the latter innings allowed Florence to pull even. In the seventh, an error by centerfielder Alvaro Ramirez allowed two runs to score to make it 3-2. The Freedom tied it up in the eighth on a fielder's choice. With runners on second and third, Florence made a bid to take the lead, but Kaase made a great grab on Stephen Cardullo's liner to end the inning.
Darrin Tew came in and threw three scoreless innings of relief for the Miners. Then finally Kaase drew a bases loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 12th. Maddox scored the championship clinching run, as the Miners won the game 4-3 and the series 3-1.
