Shawnee Advances to State Semis
MARION -- Shawnee senior Adam Pennington wanted another shot in the super-sectional, and he delivered.
Pennington was the starter and loser last year as the Redskins fell to eventual state champion Effingham St. Anthony.
This year, Pennington tossed a complete game as Shawnee held off Windsor/Stew-Stras 4-2 to earn a trip to Peoria.
The Redskins did all their damage in the third. Michael Crane's single past a drawn in infield scored Ryan Ochoa. Then with two outs, Brandon Pind hit a line drive to center. When Alex Allen couldn't catch it, the ball scooted by him and rolled all the way to the wall. Pind circled the bases for a two-run, inside the park homer. Gavyn Ellet later added an RBI triple for a 4-0 Shawnee lead.
The Blue Devils had three hits in the sixth, but did not score. Aiden McMahan picked a runner of second, helping preserve the shutout.
Windsor/SS broke through against Pennington in the seventh. Allen clubbed an RBI triple and later scored on a sac fly to cut it to 4-2, but the Blue Devils could not get the tying run to the plate. Pennington got Gunner Theis to pop out to Ellet to end it, setting off a mad celebration.
Shawnee will face either Waterloo Gibault or Jacksonville Routt Friday at noon in Peoria in the semifinals. Gibault and Routt will square off in the SIU-E Supersectional Tuesday.
