Saluki Women Rally for First Win
CARBONDALE -- The Saluki Women's Basketball team had watched a ten point second half lead disappear and was on the verge of falling to 0-7 on the season.
Trailing 57-53 with 25 seconds to play and Southeast shooting free throws, it looked bleak for SIU. The Salukis proceeded to outscore the Redhawks 5-0 in the final 17 seconds to pull out a stunning 58-57 win, their first of the season.
After the Redhawks missed the front end of a one and one, Cartaesha Macklin hit two free throws to cut it to 57-55. Then, after a steal off the press, freshman Rishonda Napier hit a pull up jumper with nine seconds left to tie the game at 57.
Southeast tried to get in position for a last second shot, but Macklin stole the pass up court, and was fouled 70 feet from the basket by Allyson Bradshaw with five tenths of a second left.
Macklin hit the first free throw and missed the second on purpose securing the Saluki win.
