Rushing Relieved as Pinckneyville Football Coach
PINCKNEYVILLE -- The only coach to lead the Pinckneyville Panthers to the football playoffs is now the former coach.
The Pinckneyville school board relieved Tod Rushing of his head football coaching duties at a board meeting Monday night.
The Panthers were 46-65 in Rushing's 12 seasons as head coach, including the only three playoff appearances in school history.
Rushing said he was surprised by the timing, saying he wasn't even aware his coaching job was on Monday night's agenda. Rushing will remain the school's track and field coach, but had already volunteered to step down as co-athletic director.
Pinckneyville superintendent Keith Hagene said the move was made not because of numbers on the field but numbers in the classroom.
Hagene said his district is in an academic crisis due to low test scores and that he wants teachers to cut back on their extra-curricular loads and focus on their subjects. Rushing teaches biology.
