NORMAL -- Illinois State took advantage of Southern Illinois' historically poor shooting to fly past the Salukis 60-40 Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal.

SIU (7-15, 4-7 MVC) shot a dismal 30 percent from the field, making just 15 of its 50 attempts. The team's 40 points was the second lowest total in the modern era. Only a 36-point showing at Bradley on February 16, 1981 was worse.

Illinois State (14-8, 6-5 MVC) broke a 14-14 tie with 6:53 left in the first half and used a 12-3 run to take a 26-17 lead at the break. The Salukis went nearly eight minutes without a field goal in that stretch.

The dawgs' shooting woes continued in the second half. In a 13-minute span that started at the end of the first half and continued to the 10-minute mark of the second, SIU went 1-15 from the field. In that time, Illinois State used a 30-5 run to pull away.

Jackie Carmichael led all scorers with 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Redbirds. John Wilkins also had a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Jeff Early and Diamond Taylor each scored 10 points to pace the Salukis. The team's primary targets coming into the game, Mamadou Seck and Dantiel Daniels, scored a combined eight points and seven rebounds.
