MARION -- The Southern Illinois Miners have a great opportunity to make up some ground in the Frontier League's Eastern Division the next few days.

The Miners opened a three-game series with first place Washington Thursday night.  Southern Illinois entered the series four games back of the Wild Things, but drew first blood by taking the opener 4-2.

Frank Martinez continued his hot second half with a couple of hits and driving in three, helping the Miners pull within three games of first.

The series continues Friday at 7:05.  The Miners will honor manager Mike Pinto before the game for picking up his 500th win last weekend.
