SESSER -- Lance Berkman's playing days with the St. Louis Cardinals may be coming to an end, but his name will permanently be remembered in Sesser.

Lance Berkman Field was dedicated at the Sesser Sports Complex during a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. Cardinals Care, the St. Louis Cardinals charity, donated the field. It will serve as the home field for the nine teams involved in the Sesser Redbird Rookies program.

Improvements included a graded and irrigated playing field, two paved and covered dugouts, bleachers, fencing and a state-of-the art solar powered scoreboard. It cost more than $100,000 to build.

Over the last 15 years, Cardinals Care has provided nearly $11 million in grants to over 800 non-profit youth organizations and built 19 youth ball fields in local disadvantaged neighborhoods.
