Lions Ready to Roll

By WSIL Sports

CARTERVILLE -- We are closing in on the start of the high school football season. One team with high expectations is the Carterville Lions.

The Lions return nine starters on offense from last year's 3A quarterfinal team. Carterville went to the spread offense last season, and that offense really started to click down the stretch. The Lions won five of their final six, averaging 40 points per game in the process.

While All South selections quarterback Michael Aschemann and running back Phillip Frangello are back to terrorize opposing defenses, Lions' coach Dennis Drust believes the key will be his experienced offensive line.

Carterville will open the season next Friday at Benton. The Lions split with the Rangers last year--losing the season opener, but winning in the second round of the playoffs.
