Carterville Comes Up Short in Supersectional

By WSIL Sports

JOHNSTON CITY-- Carterville softball looked for their first state tournament berth since 2008.  The Lady Lions got off to a strong start in their game with Teutopolis.

Avery English struck out the side in the first inning and finished with 10 strikeouts on the game, holding the Lady Shoes scoreless through five.  Carterville pushed one run across in the fourth, thanks to an RBI double by Carly Callahan.  The Lady Lions were threatening again in the fifth, but a controversial third out at first base kept it a 1-0 ball game.

Momentum shifted in the bottom of the sixth, when Teutopolis put two runners on base.  Annie Borries delivered the go-ahead two-run triple for a 2-1 Lady Shoes lead.  Carterville couldn't rally in the seventh and finished the season (28-7).

It marks the first ever trip to state for Teutopolis.
