CHARLESTON -- Carmi-White County's Michael Brown defended his state title in the 800 meter dash. Brown edged his competition down the stretch to finish in first place with a time of one 1:54.33 seconds.

"Third person in my school's history to have two straight championships and coming back and having a personal best to make it a two-peat at state is a big accomplishment and makes me extremely happy," said Brown.

West Frankfort junior Hunter Johnson competed in track and field for the first time during his high school career this year. Johnson overcame two knee surgeries to claim second place in the high jump.

"It is the first time that we have had anybody up here in awhile," said Johnson. "So to represent West Frankfort as the smallest 2A school here, I thought I should go ahead and bring home a medal."

Mount Vernon's Joseph McDaniel vaulted his way to third place by clearing 15 feet. McDaniel will now take his talents to Rend Lake.

Vienna's Trenton Lowery  leaped his way to fourth place in the 300 meter hurdles, while Harrisburg's Luke Horton claimed 4th place in the 800.

Carbondale's Tayvonne Landry medaled in two events. He finished in 4th place in the 400 and 3rd place in the 200 meter dash.

"It means a lot considering where I started and everything and to come in and do this today really means a lot and to my coaches and everybody that believed in me," said Landry. "It has been a long journey these last three years."
