MARION -- Marion senior and captain, Luke Abbott didn't follow the normal path in becoming a wrestler. He began his career as a freshman in high school. Before that, he never competed in the sport. The 113 pound Abbott struggled to learn the sport and didn't win a match until the latter part of the season.

"My freshman year was bad," said Abbott. "It was terrible. I got really discouraged starting out."

But what Luke lacked in technique then, he made up for with his effort. Now, in his senior year, he is wrestling in the 145 pound weight class and is 28-3 overall on the season.

"This sport is about drive and will power," said Abbott. "It is about how much you can put in and how much time you are willing to put in for the results you want."

"His work ethic is invaluable," said Marion wrestling coach Brandon Page. "He is one of our captains on the team. He always leads by example and does the right thing. He is just one of those kids that you want around your wrestling room everyday."

Now he has bigger dreams and with each pin Luke pulls off this season, he takes a step closer to his ultimate goal of placing at state.

"I am trying to set my goals as high as possible," said Abbott. "My coach always tells me to not settle and to never be satisfied. It is kind of our motto. Never be satisfied. My goal is to not just go to state but to place at state. I want to be remembered and not just be a state qualifier."

Luke has come a long way through his wrestling career at Marion, but he is far from finished.

Marion's wrestling team is currently 16-2 overall on the season.
