My mother faced a heart wrenching battle with cancer her entire life. Her final fight started in Jan. 2010 when her breast cancer metastasized to her bones. I just graduated college and was living in St. Louis. I left and came home to care for her and my youngest sister, Lydia. Lydia is a beautifully spirited teenager with Downs Syndrome.
My mother was a strong independent woman that fought hard her entire life but cancer finally won and took her life this Feb. 2013. Her last wishes were for Lydia to be in my care. Lydia's father who has been outside Illinois since 2005 and has rarely seen Lydia is seeking custody. And for what? We think money. Lydia comes with financial support via Social Security and other sources. He is not an upstanding citizen to people that know him. It will be detrimental to Lydia's well being if he is placed in her care.
I urge you to do a story on this. I am starting a petition in support of my family's cause for me to win custody. I want to get this story out and get the community involved. We had a fundraiser for Linda last June and raise over $10,000 to help with medical/living expenses. This is a small measure of how well loved Linda is. As an American citizen, it would be unnerving to me not to do a story on this issue. This is REAL news, a REAL issue, and means more to a young girl than anyone could probably imagine.
