I have been a resident of Franklin county for the past 16 years, I have never been so disgusted in my life, I am a disabled veteran and have paid taxes all my life. Franklin county tax assessor recently assessed my home for a value of $158,984.00 His mistake was he made a guess at the size of my home estimating it to be 50x100=5,000 sqft. It is 40x64=2,560 sqft. using his calculation my property taxes excluding the property itself equals $31.79 per square foot for the home. That being the board of review reduced my taxes and now the cost or tax value is now $138719.00 equaling $54.19 per square foot. Where is the fairness in this? with my deductions for disability and homesteading the property I will be paying over $2,300.00 per year. I am 62 years old and live on my disability. I think this is unfair, now I am told I have to take it up with the state and the form is very hard to understand with a law degree. What is wrong with these people. I showed them an appraisal that I had done, that I don't agree with due to the fact that all the comparisons were in Williamson county of hones with larger living areas, Carbondalle, Herrin, Jonston city. I don't believe property values are the same in rural Franklin county and the dollar amount per square foot is way out of reason and in no way in line with any calculation that make sense. The assessor himself must have some kind of formula and if so why is it not with proportion to the square footage?
