Johnston City Council Meeting Ends In "Scuffle"
JOHNSTON CITY-- A scuffle after Tuesday night's city council meeting is causing quite a stir in Johnston City. City leaders made several cuts at the meeting. A probationary officer and codes officer were laid-off, and the police chief took a pay cut. Those decisions created some tension and afterward two women got into a scuffle.
Witnesses say the exchange between the two women after the meeting was brief.
"Well, people lost control of their tempers. Some things were said that I'm sure the after thought that they would probably take back today."
Police Chief Ray Mileur says his officers were ordered to take two people into custody but that's not what he chose to do.
"We did detain some people, talked to some people and did take a lot of statements but there was no one taken into custody."
State troopers were also called to the scene. Mileur says all information on the incident will be forwarded to state police to avoid a conflict of interest.
"The police department is not a political arm or tool of any side of any political argument."
No charges have been filed so far but there has been what some are calling collateral damage. Mileur says a part-time dispatcher and firefighter got involved in the incident.
"Will Shelby was actually at the city council meeting- so he was among the people outside the city council chambers when the confrontation took place."
Hours later, Shelby got a letter from Mayor Ryan Horn that said he was fired. Shelby says, due to his involvement in the scuffle, he believes it is retaliation.
As a result of the events that transpired during and after Tuesday night's city council meeting, Shelby says he will be seeking legal counsel. As for Horn, he says, his decision had nothing to do with retaliation and everything to do with city finances.
State police say they are not investigating the incident, but they will forward all statements to the Williamson County State's Attorney.
