Raising Green By Going Pink
CARBONDALE-Customers at Common Grounds in Carbondale are getting more than a hot cup of java. They're learning a little bit about breast cancer.
It's part of an awareness and fundraising effort by Betsy Stace.
"It's a lot of fun, and it's nice working with other local people. Jason owning Common Grounds, us being a small business as well. It's nice to work together with people like SIH and SIU."
Betsy is a cosmetologist at Visions hair studio in Carbondale. For the last couple of years, she's spearheaded a color me pink fundraiser to go along with the SIU women's basketball team's pink out game.
"At first I did it for some friends who watched a lot of family members go through it, but then I got to meet the women who went through this amazing process and have survived. Once you meet a survivor, there is no reason to stop."
This year, Betsy and coworkers are selling gift cards for the salon. The cost is $20, but the value of the card is $25. Proceeds benefit SIH's Women with Hope program.
"The things they've been through and once you understand what that process is a little bit better, it becomes an awe factor that they've survived such a scary time period, such a threatening time period for them and their families."
Over the past couple of years, these fundraisers have netted about $7,000 for breast cancer programs.
Those cards are still available at Visions studio. And the Pink Out game is set for Saturday, February 20th. The salon will still do the pink hair dye and face painting that day.
