Democrats for U.S. Senate Debate in Carbondale

CARBONDALE-- The Democrats running for U.S. Senate in Illinois fielded questions on a range of topics during a debate Tuesday in Carbondale, but there were some that were tailored to fit the Southern Illinois audience.

On the question of conceal carry--the candidates touted the importance of the Second Amendment and allowing local governments to make decisions on the issue, but stopped short of supporting conceal carry legislation.

They were also asked about cap-and-trade legislation which enjoys little support in Southern Illinois due to the coal industry, but is moving through Congress.

All four rationalized support for a bill. (Click the video clip attached to hear part of their answers.)

Jacob Meister--an attorney--painted himself as a government outsider uniquely in tune with average voters.

Chicago Urban League president Cheryle Jackson focused acutely on her plans to create jobs and help small businesses.

State Treasure Alexi Giannoulias pointed out that opponent David Hoffman told the Chicago Tribune that he would extend current tax cuts, which Giannoulias labeled the Bush tax cuts.

Hoffman, the former inspector general for the City of Chicago, knocked Giannoulias on his resume and touted endorsements from major newspapers.
