Firearm Deer Season Preliminary Totals
WSIL -- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has released preliminary totals for the opening weekend of firearm deer season.
Records show hunters harvested 66,126 deer between November 20 and November 22.
That's 5,000 fewer deer killed than during the first three days of the 2008 firearm season.
Officials with IDNR say wet weather and a late farm season may have contributed to this year's lower numbers.
"Standing corn was a significant factor affecting hunter success for the first weekend of firearm deer hunting this year," said IDNR Forest Wildlife Program Manager Paul Shelton. "The wet weather this fall has delayed corn harvest in many locations, and that makes it tougher for hunters to find deer."
The second portion of firearm season runs December 3 through December 6.
