Judge Decides Future for Mother and Son

Play Video
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- Authorities say Shannon Wilfong abducted her son Ricky Chekevdia nearly two years ago during a custody dispute with the boy's father Mike Chekevdia. Now the mother's future with her son is in the hands of a Franklin County judge.

After hours of testimony on Tuesday, there was still no ruling. This is a case that will take careful consideration...

For nearly two years authorities and Mike Chekevdia searched for Ricky. Then, in early September, police found the now 7-year-old boy...

"I had faith in the system, in police and in my lord," said Mike Chekevdia during an interview with News 3 in September.

Police say Ricky's mother, Shannon Wilfong, had been keeping the boy at a home in Royalton, belonging to her mother, Diane Dobbs. Police say, they had been hiding him in a crawl space.

"We had to do a good job of, when everything got the way it got, and we knew we weren't gonna get help from no authorities, we were pretty much on our own and had to do what we had to do," Dobbs explained during a September interview with Good Morning America.

Wilfong and Dobbs both claim Ricky's father was abusive. But, investigators with the Department of Children and Family Services say, those claims were unfounded...

"I've done nothing wrong," Chekevdia said in September. "I was the best father I could be given the time that I had to be- had with him. And these people are just accusing me unjustly."

As for court on Tuesday, a DCFS worker who did evaluate Ricky says she just wants what's best for the boy. She says, she believes Wilfong should get supervised visitation rights with her son. She also says, she considers it "As harmful to deny the child visits with his mother- as it is to deny the child visits with his father..."

At last word, there has not been a ruling on Wilfong's visitation rights. No matter that ruling- it has nothing to do with Mike Chekevdia's involvement with Ricky.

As for Wilfong, she'll make an appearance on Thursday on the criminal abduction charges.
