Durbin Supports Extended Benefits
WSIL-TV- Senator Dick Durbin says he supports extending unemployment benefits until the job market turns around.
The Senator met with displaced workers recently in Mt. Vernon and explained the recent extension of jobless benefits.
Workers in Illinois and other states with a jobless rate of more than 8.5 percent will get an extra 20 weeks of payments.
Durbin says the extension will probably not stop there.
"I support keeping that extension moving forward as long as we need it. Currently we are on the negative side. We're losing more jobs in America than we are gaining" says Durbin.
Workers who've been laid off over the past few years told the Senator about the resources they've taken advantage of.
Many say Man-tra-con helped them expand their education.
Also, unemployment benefits made it possible for them to go back to school.
