Honoring Our Nation's Veterans
WSIL -- Celebrations took place across our area this week honoring our nation's veterans. For this week's unsung hero, we're spot lighting not only those who serve, but those who went out of their way honoring them.
Some ceremonies were somber, while others were a learning opportunity. On Tuesday, students at Carterville Intermediate School invited local veterans to eat lunch with them. Students say they were honored to share a meal with their heros.
"Because they sacrifice their lives to help us be here today and to learn and be free and think what we want to think and do what we want to do," said Madison Puckett, a seventh grader at Carterville Intermediate.
In Herrin, students at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel learned how service can help others as soldiers showed how school supplies students donated were helping kids overseas who have next to nothing.
"It felt really great knowing that we contributed something and it practically went halfway across the globe," said Tori Mattingly, a seventh grader at OLMC.
Whether it was fun filled parades or candle light vigils, those who serve were on the minds of many.
"Those who live among us today and those who live only in our memory, we know we can never repay that debt but still we try because we hold their sacrifices in our hearts everyday," said Frank Kehus, Associate Director of the Marion VA.
While people throughout the area spent the week thanking our veterans for their service, many veterans found themselves thanking others for the kind thoughts.
"It's the first time I've ever really been honored at a ceremony like this and it was very, very nice," said Tom Adams, a Vietnam veteran.
