State Budget Crisis Hits SIC
SALINE COUNTY -- A campus-wide initiative is underway at Southeastern Illinois College to reduce costs and generate revenue.
Administrators at SIC say the effort is necessary because of late payments and non-payments from the state of Illinois.
"To combat this situation, we must engage in a multi-faceted approach of program growth and cost reduction, as well as a contingency for dealing with late state payments. Cash flow is a very serious problem, and its effects can be catastrophic for colleges," said interim president Dr. Jonah Rice.
Several cost-saving measures have been introduced, including: reducing travel, limiting purchases, a voluntary executive pay freeze and a limited hiring freeze.
"We're doing everything we can to minimize costs to taxpayers and students, so that we can continue to provide quality service and support," said Dr. Dana Keating, SIC's vice president of academic services.
