H1N1 Vaccine Clinics Begin in Southern Illinois

JACKSON COUNTY-Hundreds of people in southern Illinois are now protected from the H1N1 virus. The first of several scheduled clinics took place Friday morning.

Frances Cobb is an early riser. Friday morning, she was up even earlier, waiting in line for an H1N1 vaccine given by the Jackson County Health Department. Frances lives in Johnston City, and the health department in Williamson County doesn't have the vaccine yet.

"I've got asthma and I want to make sure I don't have any complications from this flu if I happen to get it."

Frances isn't alone. Folks stood out in the rain outside the Murdale Baptist Church for this first clinic. Some people got in line starting at 5 a.m.

Gina McCann said, "I'm waiting on the H1N1 vaccine for my 13 year old daughter Jodi and I'm a diabetic and work with three and four year olds and I want to make sure we're innoculated so we don't get it."

"It's raining and we came to get a swine flu shot," Ann DeMarco said.

Angie Bailey with the health department is reminding people who will be the first to be vaccinated.

"Pregnant women, youth 24 and younger, people 25 to 64 with underlying health conditions as well as healthcare workers, and people with infants at home who are six months or younger."

While most people are eager to get the vaccine, that's not the case for everyone. Frances says despite what her friends have said, she didn't want to take a chance with her health.

"Some of my friends said you don't need it. Other people have said they'd be afraid. I'd rather be safe than sorry," said Frances.

More clinics are planned, based on the supply that is available.
