UPDATE: Interstate 57 Accident
JEFFERSON COUNTY -- A Mt Vernon man is recovering in a St Louis hospital after an accident on Interstate 57.
The accident happened just after 5:30 Wednesday evening in the northbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 90.
Illinois State Police say a SUV driven by Larry Holt, 28, of Mt Vernon, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a car driven by Martha Wortmann, 64, of Columbia, Illinois.
Holt's vehicle then flipped onto the driver's side and slid down the interstate. The Wortmann car was pushed into the back of a semi.
Wortmann received minor injuries and was taken to Crossroads Hospital in Mt Vernon for treatment.
Holt suffered major injuries and was transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis.
Illinois State Police say Holt has been ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, speeding, unlawful use of a weapon, illegal transportation of alcohol and no seatbelt.
