Pinckneyville High School Hit Hard By The Flu
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Nearly a third of the student body at Pinckneyville High School is out with the flu, more than 150 kids.
"We were hoping that the weekend would help dissipate the situation, we again had an increase today in the number of kids out," said Pinckneyville Superintendent Jonathan Green.
Green says every flu season the school sees large absences but nothing has ever come close to these numbers. With previous highs topping out in the 60's.
The flu has not only left the hallways almost empty, it's also impacted some extracurricular activities. A band trip to Sparta was cancelled this weekend but it's unclear if any other events will be cancelled last this week.
The school is being proactive is stopping the flu from spreading, state and local health departments have already been contacted.
"We took the temperatures of all our students first thing, so that we could find out what students were running a temperature," said Green.
The health department will continue to be at the school for the coming days but Green says the school will also need help from parents.
"The biggest thing we ask is that parents try to follow what we're doing and try to keep their students home if they are running a fever," said Green.
In the meantime Green says school will continue.
At this time the Perry County Health Department says there are no confirmed cases of H1N1 among the sick students.
