Former Inmate Sues Tamms Prison

Play Video
PULASKI COUNTY- Testimony is underway in an abuse lawsuit by a former Tamms prison inmate.

Anthony Gay is suing a psychiatrist who treated him at the Supermax prison.

Gay says he was strapped naked to a metal bed for up to 32 hours without food.

He claims it happened after he cut himself or threatened to do so.

Gay says he should have been treated with medication and therapy instead.

Meanwhile U-S Senator Dick Durbin held a hearing today on treatment of mentally ill inmates,"While in prison, many mentally ill prisoners have limited or no access to mental health services and their conditions deteriorate."

Durbin says using harsh treatments such as the solitary confinement at Tamms only makes things worse for mentally ill prisoners.
